Things to do in Ella

Ella is usually included on most tourists travel itineraries and has a wealth of things to do located in the centre of Sri Lanka.

1. Catch the train from Kandy to Ella

This picturesque journey takes around 7 hours and is so beautiful from start to finish!

In high season tickets get booked up far in advance so you can buy them online if you know your dates. It is also possible to purchase them in the station the morning of departure, usually this is non reserved seats.

Didn’t pre-purchase your ticket? Get on the train one stop before Kandy (Peradeniya Junctionbefore all the tourists to get a seat

Top tip: Get off the train at Demodara, all the tourists get off the train in Ella. You’ll have the train to yourself to get a picture over the Nine Arch Bridge.

2. The Nine Arch Bridge
This is a nice walk from Ella town and located on the same road as Little Adams Peak. The bridge is surrounded by tea plantations and a great opportunity to get some amazing photos.

Top tip: check out the train schedule to see when the train goes over the bridge.

3. Little Adams Peak

This is a short hike compared to Adams Peak only taking around 45 mins  walking to get to the peak from Ella Town. It has spectacular views over Ella and the mountains.

Top tip: Bring an offering for the buddha at the top of the peak

4. Ella Rock
This is the most famous trek in Ella and will take around half day. You start the trek from Ella train station and follow the train tracks (don’t worry everyone does it) there is only a few trains going a day and you’ll hear them coming. Its sign posted well along the way and there plenty of other people to guide you

Top tip: careful of touts trying to guide you the wrong way.

5. Liptons seat

This is one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive view points (on a nice day) you can see tea plantations for as far as the eye can see. You can hike to the top or catch a tuk tuk from Haputale.

Top tip:  Arrive early to avoid the crowds, it is also the best time of day to visit as afternoons can be misty.

6. Ravana falls

Just a short 10 min drive from Ella Town – you can catch the bus or get a tuk tuk! This is the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka and it makes a great swimming spot.

Top tip: Bring your swimming stuff, this is a great spot to chill in the sun and keep cool

 7. Relax in one of the many bars

Ella is a foodies paradise, with many bars and eateries to choose from. Our faves were Cafe Chill for the vibes and if you’re missing a taste of home and Matey Hut for some delicious traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
